Can humankind develop at all?

Sometimes one wonders how different people must have been back in the old days.

Sometimes one wonders about the development of human kind.

Someone one wonders when people started to be like today.

Looking back though, through art, history, letters and books one starts to wonder if there is such a thing as development.

Looking back one makes the observation that the differences that one is so proud of are not really that  knew.

Looking back one gets the opinion that what human kind in itself is unchanged.

Nowadays there are people who follow each new idea, there are people who stick to their traditions as well. Both we find in the romain world as well, what was strange was considered interesting, what was new was considered material to appear knowledgeable to fellow humans. Popular pictures ruled their minds and they brought copies into their homes just like nowadays people bring them to their blogs. Everything with sexual allegories was popular, now that hasn't changed all through the centuries, so it is not surprising at all. That sexual depiction can be found even on their sarkophags though might be to some. People were tolerant of religions well most are nowadays. Even back then some people were intolerant and tried to extinguish unwanted threads of the educational kind which was as succesful as it was in the centuries that followed. The palace leaked information and then it was nobody who told a thing, just well like our politicians today.

The surrounding changed in material, relation to nature, nearly every aspect was transformed by adding other aspects and pieces of information yet the behavioural patterns of human kind remained the same. People choose what seems important to them and dedicate their life to persuing their  vision of happiness while others let all of these be chosen for them by the masses, loved ones or society. Fashion rules - kept alive and formed by the taste of majority - as it did back then. The same topics bring attention to ourselves: virgin or whore, science or religion, nation one or nation two, religion or philosophy, female man or male man, rough people-sensitive people, knowledgeable people or people stuck in their half way to wisdom...

Can humankind develop at all?

That thought arises form the depth of thought...

Has it been talked about before?

Given time and the complexity of words written, thought and discussed all around probably...

Can humankind develop at all?

Since our lifes are limited to a certain period of time in which one can learn, form opinions, act and be a not new discovered influence as well as being unable to transform our wisdom gained with all sources, explanations and experiences into another being... A strict no...

No development in the basic features possible.

Interesting concept it is a tricky one indeed.
Perhaps the environment has changed rather than us , which leads us to thinking we have changed but its the environment around us.!!
Sort of like animals if you will they haven’t changed over hundreds of years but the environment around them has, causing them to adapt
Well that’s just one mans opinion anyway
    Great idea

Thank you, I was confronted by the idea when I looked at historical concepts of society and how people lived and well it seems humankind never developed but actually stayed the same always recreating the same surrounding with only more and more artificial additions of things that were there already

Very intriguing and I hope you have many more of those ideas your confronted with
        I’ll be waiting haha
I have to agree with you a lot of people said we have evolved with times and etc…. We have changed but I’m leaning towards the idea of what you put forward a whole heck of a lot more now, the environment has changed or the landscape but as humans we have just adapted to the environments we are given that makes us appear we have changed , I mean sure we have changed slightly but you know what i mean
Well done these are the posts I like it gets you thinking

I think that people have improved. We have better technology than we used to. Only 40 years ago, people would not have dreamed of having something like an iPhone that they can use for videochat or the internet. Science has changed as well. It caused a shift in the way many people think about the world, in terms of evolving life creatures including bacteria and viruses, instead of mainly following the rules of religion. We also have much better medicine. Today, we can repair a torn ACL in the knee, when just about 30 years ago, that was not possible.

    January 08, 2016
    1. yayuki

Yes, the knowledge improved but the interest in the knowledge gained decreases. Universities changed they don’t go for knowledge first anymore but for what is financially supported, same goes for hospitals that are not able to use the best method but the one with the lowest cost. Being able to do something is often restricted to only a certain group of people. But it is not a new development during all ages people did not improve in adding freedom but restricting it, limiting it. At present I am confronted with the idea that it is not popular to look at texts because of the value of the information or the knowledge presented but instead at formal aspects… If we start to look at the best texts in literature, they did not touch and reach people by building structures or counting syllables…. It is the metaphoric expression, the topic, the motivs not the body of the text or whether it fits a theory….The same human made problems always limit people. It is a vicious circle that makes could disciplines die because they develop in a direction that will simply make another discipline swallow them. A century of development is always followed by a century of going backwards. It is like people are fed up with freedom of speech trying their best to undo it’s basic foundation to simply unable others to utter a similar thing. Knowledge and values are not regarded as important as who had the first thought of it. People can come up with the same ideas based on the same analysis why should the achievement of the first be better. It was what destroyed the old big reigns the destructive tendency to restrict and limit to support fame and selfflattery which is usually followed by a dull period or dark age until people want the freedoms to do this or that again…makes one think of writing Cervantes stuff all over again…fighting the windmill’s wings…

      January 08, 2016
      1. tulakrystal

Ah, ok. You have a lot of information in here that I am not familiar with. I am not a trained writer, but a scientist. I just happen to like to write. I’m not sure if people have more of a disinterest in learning now than they did in the past. Where I grew up people never really cared about education in general as many people go into jobs such as iron working and construction which do not require a college education while women do not tend to attend college. I have heard that there are areas of the world where poets and artists are being imprisoned for creative expression because the government thought that their expression was “insulting the sacred”, though (http://www.iranhumanrights.org/2016/01/hila-sedighi-arrested/#.VpBWVFeBVq8.twitter). That kind of thing sounds very oppressive indeed. I hope that we are not all going backwards and am not sure if that is the case in all areas of the world. Genetics research seems to be improving a great deal. I think I might want to get my own genes analyzed for $99 to see what my ancestry is and if I inherited any genetic abnormalities. I do think that freedom of speech is important and that sometimes things need to be said so that we can maintain our freedom and keep from being too easily controlled.

        January 09, 2016
        1. yayuki

Yes, it is posible that it is the same amount of people that is not interested in education. At present though I think that in my country and in some countries friends observe people it seems to be the development. Learning to achieve a certain job is observed as normal but beyond that point as in real interest in struggle to improve no development. Students only take courses that they need to do, 5 to 10 years ago though the experience was students take a lot of courses out of plain interest. The main stream interest also seems to be fashion and sexual related topics here and then news-dominated. But then again I expect to much of people recently I guess. Growing up I expected certain values that are concidered values to be lived values but people only theoretically agree to them as valueable.

          January 10, 2016
          1. tulakrystal

I agree that it is sad that students don’t seem to take courses that they are interested in because they want to learn about something too. I don’t know if it’s a good idea to expect too much of people. While growing up, I didn’t always like it if people expected to much of me because I thought that I might let them down. After all, even if they thought something like I was smart, it didn’t mean that I could do something like solve their problems for them or even solve any of the problems that they thought I could as the task that they expected me to do was not something that I really knew anything about or could do. For example, there’s that saying out there that says, if you told a fish that it should be able to be great at flying, but the fish never could no matter how much it tried, the fish would go its whole life thinking that it was stupid when, in reality it wasn’t, it simply wasn’t built to fly like a bird.

I like the picture of the fish and I agree

tulakrystal, as a scientist myself, I too marvel where we have gone with the hardware of live. But, I think I join with Grenuie in my concern of our development of our spiritual side of life, our values as humans. Look at the hate in the Trump followers (easy target forgive me please) and the wars in the Middle East and our role in it, the 30,000 people killed in the U.S., 750,000 homeless people on our streets, etc. etc. They all share a common problem. We do not love or value our fellow humans. Our humanity is so under-developed in much of the world … even in our own lives. It is very sad.

      January 10, 2016
      1. wirelessguru1

Dude, not all Trump followers are hateful!

        January 10, 2016
      2. wirelessguru1

Also Grenuie blocks Me (God) so she is obviously not very concerned about the development of our spiritual side of life!

        January 10, 2016
      3. wirelessguru1

Also, until just about 500 years ago White Europeans considered Asians, Africans and American natives as sub-humans.

        January 10, 2016
      4. tulakrystal

Yes, I do agree that many people are not in touch with the spiritual side of life and it is concerning. I’m not someone who is particularly interested in politics, or debating it on the internet, or Donald Trump either. I also think that it would be nice if, like Grenuie said, people would try and consider the validity of another person’s point of view before blurting something out in order to be able to engage in an exchange of information so as to learn more about the other person and appreciate them as a person who deserves to be treated with dignity and respect. Truly it is very sad how humanity seems so underdeveloped in much of the world. I do still think that people can grow spiritually. I also wonder to what extent physical limitations could hinder that growth. The telomers in our DNA can’t always protect our cells from damage and we may have harmful mutations that can result in an uncontrolled cancerous growth of cells. I figure that, in that situation, a person still may reach a great height in spiritual awareness and growth and could view cancer as a loser instead of themselves.

        January 11, 2016
        1. wirelessguru1

Man is developing physically (the time to run a mile by man keeps declining, etc.) why not mentally, socially, emotionally. My own opinion there is evolving awareness in the world that each life is valuable .. .the evidence, for example, evolving woman’s rights slowly across the globe.

    January 08, 2016
    1. yayuki

Yes, indeed good values develop all around the world, we hope they reach all humans in the same way. I am not sure we develop mentally, socially, emotionally beyond the state that we had at birth. Living seems to narrow our minds instead of broaden them at times. I was considering history and after a century focused on gaining knowledge there always follows a century of questioning values, rethinking and developing backwards in favour of lower interests (money, power, etc.)

      January 10, 2016
      1. RRoe

I think of us as a seed that develops into a plant, a glorious one if our soil is rich, the sun is full and rain falls upon us in the right proportions. However, if the soil is full of money, power, greed then the plant is not so glorious and its fruit may not even form.

            3. RRoe

I am not sure I can take the metaphor much further … but if you could taste the love that we have for our fellow humans on this planet I think you would find much of it is bitter (tainted by greed, etc.)

              January 10, 2016
            4. yayuki

I like the positive metaphors better, too but I was trying to be objective about the circle of development and regression

              January 10, 2016
            5. RRoe

I do not think we can be objective yet since the story has not yet been completed. I want to believe humanity is evolving into being a kinder, gentler species, but the evidence is mixed … I want to believe that once “truth” has been discovered it can not be buried and that it will eventually infect the world, but I also recognize that “evil” born of “ignorance” is powerful and not likely to disappear in our life time. It is our job to remain optimistic and evolve as much as we can as humans and hope it is enough to move future generations into a kinder, more loving world.

Taking into consideration the sequence of evens that preoccupy the human psyche, i would conclude that evolution of our species has reached a self inflicted plateau. Not for all, but for most.

    January 08, 2016
    1. yayuki

I agree, we have reached the analysis that to be happy we have to regard our needs and disentangle from all that influence us in a bad way. That is a thought that doesn’t work for society though… or we all end up ignoring our loved ones and place us above everybody else.. a one way road to destruction which will of course be followed by rethinking

It is essential to maintain a sense of vigilance in the recionition of intentions whether be “yours” or anothers. Easier said than done, although the allowance of intuitive implementation wil supercede over ones preconcived notions that they are powerless. “pretentious”, eh?

Yes. Oh, we are selfish, egocentric creatures, some are power hungry, money hungry, dead set on being right, that doesn’t change. But, humans overall? Yes. We think, we feel, we grow, we teach what we learn to the young and, in turn, they teach. There was a time in the world when no one looked further than their own day-to-day survival and their own beliefs. We have now expanded (though it’s taken a few thousand years) to ensuring the survival of those that come after us, and even, in some cases, those that come after them. We are more open to re-thinking what we believe and how we consider the beliefs of others. I say, yes, we can change. Slowly, but surely.

    January 08, 2016
    1. yayuki

I don’t think we are selfish, egocentric creatures but we grow up to accept that focusing on ourselves is the only healthy way because of the rules society tries to imprint on us. Somehow people don’t develop beyond the point that is less self-gain- centered. I hope people will develop but I don’t see any interest of tendency to do so in society while of course there are individuals that crave, need, are convinced a change would be preferable

      January 10, 2016
      1. GoldenPig2012

Oh, well, we disagree. We are selfish and egocentric, that does not mean we don’t step past or over or beyond those tendencies to accomplish awesome things, we do. But to deny those tendencies are there is………………being a bit………..TOO optimistic, according to me, only me. So, no harm, no foul.

yauki, not once did I think you objected to anyone being this way, you said, “I don’t think we are selfish, egocentric creatures, but we grow up to accept that focusing on ourselves…”. As a mother of five, I promise you I’ve seen those traits in the very young who grow up to shed those traits and become generous, kind, loving human beings. I don’t think “everyone” is a horrible egocentric being intent on nothing but their own advantages. Sorry if I gave that impression. It’s just that I find it to be a dominant trait, overcome, of course, but there.

            January 10, 2016
            1. yayuki

That is interesting… I usually observed very young children to easily share unless their parents gave the impression they disagreed with this behaviour. I sometimes wonder how much instinct influences the young.

yayuki, um………….I do not doubt you’ve seen the little ones sharing, but……………..as one who has raised five of them, that is NOT the norm. “MINE” is the norm. I’ve been witness, more than once, to a little one destroying a creation before another can claim it. Before you might start making judgments, no, I never encouraged that behavior. From the birth of the second one I was all about sharing and giving and sharing and understanding and sharing while still being different, etc. But………….humans are humans.
Maybe I’m an awful mother, incapable of seeing or giving or encouraging fairness, that might be, Lord knows my own opinion is subjective.

    January 10, 2016
    1. yayuki

I believe you. The sibling fights I’ve seen them, too. I always wondered how much is about attention. I sure remember mainly doing things wrong and causing distress to get all eyes on me, being the one loved more was a main reason to struggle and fight. As a child nothing might feel better than someone else being reprimanded for something you did, nonetheless one grows out of it and uses the tactics to help others if one wishes to do so. I’m still looking for the reason kids choose at a very young age to be good or bad… Mothers have hard work, I don’t believe a loving mother could ever be an awful mother… but that is my subjective opinion. I am still researching the aspect of how much is instinct how much is education/ experience… Maybe sometime someone will unlock the one reason why the human development is/seems to be circular…

      2. GoldenPig2012

I don’t think, at all, children, et al, “choose” to be good or bad, it’s instinctual…..what will serve my best interests? That’s human. They, the children, love their siblings, would fight to the death FOR them, but, strangely enough, would also fight to the death AGAINST them. I have no explanation for that. I simply accept it and try to navigate it. I had NO siblings, yet, I am a mother of five. So, maybe I should be discounted as part of your research.

        January 10, 2016
        1. yayuki

No, that sums it up very well. Siblings are more important than strangers… fighting for them impresses family and friends but on the inside the interest is to have something for yourself, to be the stronger one, the one with most parent respect/love but also free of chores… A fun time. Yet, I was always interested in the greater good while a friend always headed for cause the most cries. Never understood the idea to not make people feel bad as a origin for being happy.
